Making Space for Anger: A Trauma-Informed JourneyDance® Experience [ONLINE]

On October 8, women across the country are rising up to #StopSexualViolence.
There are many ways to take action.
We can march.
We can speak out.
We can organize.
We can demand accountability.
We can speak out.
We can organize.
We can demand accountability.
And we can make space for what all of this may be bringing up in our bodies.
For some of us, that's anger.
For others, it may be grief, sadness, overwhelm, numbness, disconnection — or nothing at all.
There is no right way to feel.
Making Space for Anger is a virtual, trauma-informed JourneyDance® experience offered as part of the October 8 #StopSexualViolence Day of Action.
This isn't about working ourselves into a rage or getting angry for the sake of being angry.
It's about making room for what's already here.
Because anger isn't necessarily something we need to immediately fix, quiet, transcend, or get rid of.
Sometimes anger is the part of us that recognizes:
This is not okay.
Anger can carry information.
It may point us toward a boundary that needs our attention.
A value that matters deeply to us.
A need that hasn't been met.
Something that feels deeply unjust.
Something we are no longer willing to accept.
A value that matters deeply to us.
A need that hasn't been met.
Something that feels deeply unjust.
Something we are no longer willing to accept.
And anger carries energy.
Through music, movement, breath, sound, reflection, and rest, we'll explore that energy through the body — with choice at every step.
Maybe your body wants to move.
Shake.
Stomp.
Push.
Make sound.
Stomp.
Push.
Make sound.
Maybe it wants something smaller.
Maybe it wants stillness.
Maybe it doesn't want to go toward the anger at all.
You get to choose.
You are always in charge of your body here.
Every movement is an invitation.
Make it bigger. Make it smaller. Change it. Pause. Rest. Skip it completely.
Make it bigger. Make it smaller. Change it. Pause. Rest. Skip it completely.
This is not a space for reliving trauma. You will not be asked to tell your story, remember what happened, disclose personal experiences, or deliberately activate yourself.
And you do not need to connect your movement to anything that has ever happened to you.
If we do meet our anger, we'll get curious:
What might my anger be pointing toward?
What matters so much to me that I'm angry about it?
Is there a boundary that needs my attention?
A value I want to stand for?
Something I am no longer willing to accept?
And what, if anything, do I want to do with that information?
Because the goal isn't necessarily to get rid of our anger.
Maybe the goal is to be able to hear it without letting it consume us.
To give it room without giving it control.
To let it move when movement feels right.
To listen for what it might be telling us.
And then to choose what comes next.
We'll close by giving our bodies time to settle, breathe, ground, and integrate.

You don't have to be angry to come.
You don't have to be a survivor.
You don't have to share anything.
You don't need any dance or movement experience.
As always, everything is an invitation.
If anger is here, we're not going to tell it to shut up.
We're going to make some space.
Because your anger isn't evidence that something is wrong with you.
Sometimes your anger is evidence that you know something is wrong.
Maybe it's time we listen.
