Rage Against The Regime
The Big Betrayal Bill presents significant risks to vulnerable populations. Substantial spending cuts will impact essential social programs that serve millions. According to GovFacts ((https://govfacts.org/explainer/how-the-one-big-beautiful-bill-targets-medicare-and-medicaid/), more than 130 million Americans rely on these programs and could be affected by the proposed changes. The bill proposes reducing federal funding—resources supported by taxpayer dollars—that many depend on for their well-being.
The spending cuts target programs that serve the poorest Americans, including Medicare and food stamps. As a result, insurance prices may rise, disproportionately affecting low-income and disabled individuals, as well as those seeking gender-affirming care. These reductions may also affect services tailored to individual needs, including surgical, mental health, and social support services.
Research has shown that access to gender-affirming care can improve self-esteem, mental health, and overall well-being. For instance, a study published in JAMA Surgery (2021) found that gender-affirming surgery was associated with significantly reduced psychological distress and suicidal ideation (citation: JAMA Surg. 2021;156(7):611-620). The loss of such care may increase mental health risks for transgender and non-binary individuals. Additionally, reductions in funding for resources such as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline could make it harder for those in crisis to receive timely support, potentially resulting in life-threatening consequences.
While many in our community feel a sense of urgency and concern about these developments, it is important to engage constructively and make our voices heard. Bans Off Our Bodies (Carson City) will be supporting 50501 Northern Nevada in their upcoming event, "Rage Against the Regime." This event is intended as a peaceful demonstration to advocate for the needs of our community. Please join us on Saturday, August 2nd; the event will take place in the morning, with the exact time to be announced soon.
In addition to the demonstration, 50501 Northern Nevada is organizing a food drive to support local food banks. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable, non-expired food items to contribute.
Thank you for standing with us as we work to support communities throughout Northern Nevada.
