University of Nevada Free America Walkout

The first year of the Trump administration has confirmed our worst fears: the dismantling of the Department of Education, the slashing of national research funds, ICE raids on our communities, national guard troops occupying our cities, attacks on immigrants, families torn apart, mass surveillance, and terror. At the beginning of the second year of the Trump Administration’s term, it is clear this egregious authoritarian threat to our nation and constitution has no intention of stopping. It is time for our University of Nevada - Reno community to remember that together WE have a voice.

Trump is attacking educational institutions and professional degrees: The Trump Administration has reclassified the list of professional degrees to REMOVE degrees such as nursing, physical therapy, dental hygiene, occupational therapy, social work, architecture, education and accounting to reduce student loan caps from previous “full cost of attendance” to a lower cap. The administration has cut over 3 billion dollars in research grants and has proposed cuts of 44 billion dollars in the future. American Progress estimates a loss of seven million dollars in Nevada, while values are much higher elsewhere[1]. Why is slashing educational funds a classic move for fascists? The less people are educated, the easier they are to control. 

As the threats grow, our American movement must persevere and find new voices. Trump and his allies have already made it clear that they will not work for anything but personal profit and greed. According to Forbes, Trump’s personal wealth has increased by 3 billion dollars in just the first 8 months of his presidency[2]. They have and will continue to reject the needs of ordinary people.

On January 20, we call on our communities to organize teams, call your neighbors and classmates, and turn your back and walk out on fascism. We are stronger together.

★ We fight for a future that belongs to us all. ★ 

Time: 11 am local time, January 20th, 2025.

Location: Knowledge Center (Main Library building) Front Lawn, University of Nevada Campus. Not inside the Knowledge Center building, outside on the grass. 

Goal: Freely express dissatisfaction with the Trump administration through peaceful actions such as signs, chants, and constructive conversations. Participants should remember that they are not alone in this dark time.

Advisement for Participants: While free speech is encouraged on the University of Nevada Campus, all participants must not impede normal university functions. This includes regularly scheduled classes, research, events, ceremonies or normal and essential operations to proceed without interference; allowing parking; allowing the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic; allowing the ingress and egress to and from all buildings; allowing a group that has reserved the space to use it; allowing a speaker or performer to be seen and heard by the audience; maintaining a noise level in compliance with the University’s Sounds Policy as stated in section 5,440 [3]; and assuring that actions do not create an imminent health or safety hazard.

TLDR: Do not bother people going about their business!

It is also paramount for safety that all participants:

★Non Violence is critical to this event's success.

★Be aware of de-escalation strategies.

★Do NOT bring ANY weapons legal or illegal.

★Follow lawful orders from University Police. 

★ Disperse at the end of the scheduled event.

★ The University is our Ally.
